WorldTalk for Windows ReadMe
Version 2.3.2 18-Oct-05
Changes made as follows:
Kludged to ignore null marks returning “Mark_” in AIFF files, rather than generating an error.
Version 2.3.1 7-Jan-05
Changes made as follows:
Updated to allow customisation for Topics. All entries in CUSTOM/ are now optional, and if missing the system will default back to normal. The existence of a custom logo cuslogo.pct is taken as implying that the “EuroTalk Products” button should be hidden.
Version 2.3.0 17-Aug-04
Changes made as follows:
Updated to allow customisation for LearnDirect, using custom.txt and directory CUSTOM/

Restructured in line with new StoryWorld and Listen.

Updated ReadMe.txt etc.
Version 2.2.10 31-Oct-03
Changes made as follows:
Updated to include JohnnyPop’s demo bodges!

Boot program restructed – WLDTALK.AST sets up some globals then chains WTBOOT.AST.

Immersion version WLDTALKI.AST sets source to same as target and disables source language change.

CDS directory no longer used – “Other EuroTalk Products” selects a web-site specified in web.txt.
Version 2.2.9 30-Sep-03
Changes made as follows:
(Very minor) problem fixed in the “select user” screen - the blue arrow wouldn’t display if the user entered a single-character name while Ozzy was still speaking.
Version 2.2.8 31-Jul-03
Changes made as follows:
XP ‘limited account’ problem believed fixed. Student records now stored in Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Eurotalk\WorldTalk if possible.
Version 2.2.7 18-Feb-03
Changes made as follows:
Bug where sentences game end-score was partially obscured fixed.

CD-check disabled, so laptop users can copy to hard disk (but network users still get “not licenced for use on a network”)
Version 2.2.6 26-Apr-02
Changes made as follows:
Fixed click-on-button-2-at-start bug in two-player quiz.
Version 2.2.5 6-Dec-00
Changes made as follows:
Changes for Network Manager incorporated.
More changes for WHS incorporated.
Bug hitting boxes on conversation game before answers displayed fixed.
Version 1.10 14-Nov-00
Changes made as follows:
Changes for WHS incorporated.
Bug hitting return on second 2-player quiz name-entry box on NT4 fixed.
Version 2.1 15-Nov-99
Changes made as follows:
A bug in shared student records causing names not be saved on new records has been fixed.
The amount of text that can be displayed in the ReadMe has been increased.
Version 2.0 5-Nov-98
This is an initial test version featuring shared student records. This works as follows:
The system looks for a file STUDREC.TXT in its network install directory – if found, it tries to use shared student records. The network install directory must be write-enabled for this to work. The contents of STUDREC.TXT are of no significance – the file’s presence is the important thing (it is also used as a semaphore for file locking). At the moment this file must be created manually – eventually its creation should be an option in the network install program.
Multiple classes are supported by using multiple network install directories. Records in a directory ‘WorldTalk Form A’ will be kept separate from a directory ‘WorldTalk Form B’.
When trying to access shared records, the system makes 10 attempts over a 10 second period; if this fails, it exits with a request to contact the net administrator. File locking problems can frequently be solved by deleting STUDREC.TXT then re-creating it.
When shared records are in use, the student records, student game scores, and two-player quiz records are all held centrally. Help-language and record information is still held locally however (We don’t want one user changing help language to affect the whole system!)
The single-player quiz question-pool is now held centrally on a ‘per-player’ basis. The multi-player quiz question-pool is held locally on a ‘per-machine’ basis.
In order to reduce net traffic and potential file-locking problems, student records are NOT saved every menu entry on the shared record version (but they still are on the single-user version). This means a crash can make it appear that records have been lost; this will be fixed the next time the student successfully logs in however.
The new version needs careful testing on 95, 98, and NT!
Version 1.9 5-Nov-98
Changes made as follows:
A bug in highlighting when the language selection goes onto a second page has been fixed.
A bug in the spinner causing ‘Bad range for random’ has been searched for – but not found. Let me know if you find a way to reproduce this one.
A bug getting record help after (or while) printing has also been search for – but not reproduced.
The system now speaks a ‘well done’ message (male ‘yes’ response 5 to 10) if the student scores 100%.
A ‘version.txt’ file has been added to the PC directory – to keep track of the version!
Version 1.8 13-Oct-98
Changes made as follows:
New version of Astra V18.3 fixes problem with ‘Abort’ on very strange printer set-ups (such as the EuroTalk office!).
Version 1.7 13-Oct-98
Changes made as follows:
Start screen only shows number of users if network enabled.
Help bubble no longer appears ‘behind’ blanker on sentence game screen.
Award screen debug switched off!
Version 1.6 12-Oct-98
Changes made as follows:
Clicking lifebelt on main menu no longer gives system error.
Award screen printer now works again.
Student records Print Student List now works again.
Build sentence game buttons now disabled while not visible.
Start screen now shows site address and number of users.
Version 1.5 30-Sep-98
Changes made as follows:
Mouse clicks are now eaten on ALL games after the ‘No’ response. So double clicks on the Weather game (and elsewhere) are now ok.
The complete student score is now written out (and the scores sorted) on every return to the main menu. Previously only the last-played game score was written out which could give the (false) impression that scores were lost after a crash; also that scores were incorrect on the start name select panel.
Start-screen position of licensee text is now top right.
Investigated, but not reproduced, were the following:
Volume control gives O>S>D> error (???) in box.
Numbers game writes back zero score. This is done deliberately if the user has answered a question wrong, but not if the user doesn’t answer ANY questions.
Calendar game confuses August and July.
Directions don’t match answers. (Don’t know about Italian, but I’m sure they do in English!)
Couldn’t play sound at start.
Double click on menu button can crash system.
Version 1.4 2-Sep-98
Changes made as follows:
Bug doing first-time install on system with unknown language fixed.
Version 1.3 29-Aug-98
Changes made as follows:
Catalog program modified so the FrontScreen has a ‘resize’ parameter – OLD VERSIONS WITHOUT THIS SHOULD NOT BE USED ON WORLD TALK!
Licence.txt fixed to remove an incompatibility with Astra formatted text (a leading slash /thing is taken as switching on italics).
Separate PC directory restored (TO DO – test if this introduces an unacceptable slow-down).
ReadMe.txt updated with credits etc.
Localised help system implemented as specified. Help files can be either on the CD, or an additional ‘helpdir’ specified in the .ini file. Help bubbles, flags and ‘Good day’ sounds are looked for first in ‘helpdir’ (if specified), then on the CD. ‘Good days’ are optional – if the file isn’t found, no greeting is given.
Network security implemented as specified. .ini file entries are as follows:
[Licence]

Licence0=Dave Parkinson

Licence1=2|1|Dave Parkinson|3 Park Crescent, York|World Talk!|2|0|438014
where Licence0 = old-style licence, with field = name
Licence1 = new-style licence, with fields = type (selects lic.pct)

network (0 = not allowed)

name

site

product

target language

number of users (currently unused)

magic number
Note that setting network = 0 will currently also disable running off local hard disk.
The system now looks for ‘licence.txt’ in it’s entry directory (may be on network server). This file contains a sequence of ‘licence1’ entries as follows:
2|1|Wellington the dog|315/317 New Kings Road,London SW6 4RF|Talk Now!|20|250|9892902

2|1|Dave Parkinson|3 Park Crescent, York|World Talk!|2|0|438014
If a matching entry is found, the local .ini file is updated accordingly.
New ‘not licenced’ screen implemented.
Start screen modified as specified.
Change language screen implemented.
Animals and Directions games – Ozzy logic changed.
Build sentence game – help2 button removed, standard play/stop button added.
Calendar game new clue mechanics implemented.
Main menu has new pen cursor icon. Main menu also speaks ‘welcome’ sound (if present) on first entry and on language change.
New registration screen implemented. ‘Lifebelt’ help disabled if the current language is English.
Version 1.2 30-Jun-98
Changes made as follows:
Quiz map adjusted so active region includes text area.
Version 1.1 22-Jun-98
Changes made as follows:
A larger font size is specified for the licensee name on the start screen, hopefully avoiding the problem of very small text on the Japanese system.
‘Days’ graphic no longer visible when calendar clue zooms away.
Automatic return from award info screen after ‘not high enough’ or after (really) printing certificate.
On the name select screen, the blue button flashes when displayed (available for use).
Making a noise on the record section before the Vdu meter is displayed no longer causes an error “No such brush Vdu”. (This could be caused by clonking the mouse! )
Version 1.0 17-Jun-98
Changes made as follows:
The ‘yellow blobs’ on the menu have been fixed at last (Thanks Chris!)
The catalogue program now lines up properly. This has required a (backwards-compatible) change in cdviewer.ast - don’t use older versions with WorldTalk.
The ‘red herrings’ in GameG (Sentences) are no longer chosen randomly.
Version 0.99 16-Jun-98
Known outstanding issues:
The ‘yellow blobs’ on the menu still look rather nasty.
The catalogue program doesn’t line up with an 800 x 600 default screen size. This is a particular problem on 640 x 480 displays.
Changes made as follows:
Global issues:
It is now possible to exit a game without trying a question without score being updated or displayed. (Trying a question and getting it wrong however, will result in a score of zero.)
Care is now taken to switch the big clues glass off at the end of each question, and before Ozzy or Sasha pops up.
CD checking and module encryption enabled.
Scoring kludged so 10 blobs need 100%, 2 blobs need 20%, but 1 blob only needs 1%.
Volume-control drag lines up better.
Start screen:
New scroller with repeating up/down arrows.
New licence name entry and display as requested.
Menu screen:
Quit button repositioned on 640 x 480 screen.
Quit button now highlights.
Volume control moved up for 640 x 480 screen.
Spinner selects randomly from games with lowest scores.
Dictation:
Able to drag within the speed knob.
Clicking on snail/deer sets to min/max speed.
Quiz:
No “That’s the end of the quiz” sequence if user quits early.
Record:
Record ‘thermometer’ moved left.
Ozzy’s lips now ‘synch’ better with longer user input (classic rounding error fixed!)
Animal game:
Small pictures repositioned for 640 x 480 mode.
Numbers game:
Score panel now in front of Ozzy’s hand.
Map game:
Highlight on turn 3 in clue no longer clipped.
Properly de-aliased image of car now used until car moves.
True/False game:
Buttons only flash on first question.
Dialogue game:
Mouse queue flushed after ‘speaker’ sound replay.
Diary game:
Transparency switched off on floating graphic.
Floater switched off when moving into other buttons
Floater snaps to calendar square before resizing
Version 0.9 12-Jun-98
Changes made as follows:
New stuff:
Dictation text display and print implemented. The PC prints lower-resolution colour versions of the worksheets - these are stored as target(n)\d(1-6)\wsprinc(1-6).pct.
Certificate print implemented.
Student-record print implemented (multi-page if needed).
Global issues:
‘SHIFTJIS’ character set now specified for all fonts used to display student names. SHOULD allow names to appear in Japanese (Andrew to test please!)
In addition to previous points, the mouse queue is now flushed after all help and clues. Hopefully this fixes the problem of “left over” clicks.
There is now a pause between ‘joined up’ bits of Ozzy and Sasha audio.
The picture change now happens BEFORE “Question X” on ALL games (unlike the Mac! )
Selection of yes/no responses is now random, rather than getting ‘stronger’ as the user gets more right or wrong answers. (But I hate it when Ozzy calls me ‘hopeless’ after just one error! )
Selecting the current category on the menu strip is now ignored, rather than restarting the current category.
Clicking outside the clue window now forces an exit.
Ozzy/Sasha mouth now in the ‘x’ position at the start of utterance.
Multi-clues now wait with clue ‘selected’ until end of sound (not asynch any more )
Scores not divisible by 5 are no longer rounded up (score played from number game).
Multi-part clues can now be interrupted by mouse clicks.
Start screen:
Map areas extended so hand drags. (Sort of)
CD viewer replaced by version on 21st April Talk Now! Turkish.
Screen blanking improved on switch to CD viewer (so you don’t see display building). Screen blanking removed in other cases.
New startup.pct incorporated. licence0.pct renamed to lic0.pct.
Return arrow on text frame cleaned up (was transparency problem).
Highlights on ‘Readme’ and ‘Licence’ now switched off properly.
Name input screen:
Logo pulled in from shared\startup\wtlogo.pct
New flag/title graphic incorporated and positioned.
Japanese input is different because we now run 32-bit on 32-bit systems; we use the default IME behaviour which is different between Win16 and Win32.
Main menu:
Icon animations not stopped on mouseleave.
Revised cmenu4.flc incorporated.
Quit button returns to start screen, not name input.
New flag and logo.
Name is a bit smaller.
Yellow dots are more generous (one given on any score, all given on 90%)
Award info:
Flag and logo as per main screen.
Click interrupts animation
Dictation engine:
Click interrupts Ozzy.
Minimum dictation speed now a lot slower (pauses twice as long).
TV Quiz:
Dave comes on earlier.
Dave waves when introduced; doesn’t wave between rounds.
New exit icon.
‘Ding’ when user gets correct answer before applause. (Should Dave get one too?)
3rd zero not clipped if you get 1000 points.
Record:
No more ‘left over’ cursors during record playback.
Sentence game:
gClueInt.aif no longer used.
“No” response no longer given (just buzzer).

Version 0.8 8-Jun-98
Changes made as follows:
New start screen with ReadMe, Products and Licence buttons all working. (But currently limited to four pages maximum.)
New installer puts in just one icon. Background graphic is in shared\startup\ainstall.dib.
New main menu wheel and spinner.
New exit icons.
New ‘menu target’ graphic and menu strip.
No ‘next’ sounds.
New woman in game E.
Directions game questions 11-20 implemented (but hpath files need fixing).
Directions game help implemented.
Weather game center window animation fixed
New weather game help.
New dictation.
New quiz sounds. Current sound usage is as follows:

Single player

All quizes (single and two-player) now share one question pool.
New Sasha in record
Data changes:
Target/Dict/DictMisc restored (speeds up dictation menu); shared/Dict/DictMisc created.
Fpic6.pct (balloons) resized (but palette needs fixing).
Hphot18.pct (market) colour depth reduced (but palette needs fixing).
Still to do:
Dictation text display and print
Certificate print
Student record print
CD checking and net version install.
Version 0.7 22-Apr-98
Changes made as follows:
Game E “Answers” written. The circle complete at last. Yippee!
Version 0.6 5-Apr-98
Changes made as follows:
Game I “Calendar” written.
Game J “Weather” written. (But exclusion of illegal pictures not yet implemented.)
Game F “True or False” written.
2-player Quiz written.
Quiz now pauses opponent while loading – runs faster on slow CD-ROM drives.
Quiz select screen dumped.
Record updated to use new routines with higher quality, VDU meter and level control. (Level control works in 32-bit version only.)
Volume control updated in 32-bit version. Now controls speaker volume (not WAV volume); no longer blams volume to 0.75 full on entry and restores on exit; much better chance of working on Windows 98.
Changes to the data storage are as follows:
shared\gamei\*.pct moved to shared\gamei\ipics
New directory shared\gamei\itext contains correct-answer files (day, month).

shared\gamej\*.pct moved to shared\gamej\jpics
target\gamef\fsound\*.aif moved to target\gamef
Version 0.5 5-Feb-98
Changes made as follows:
Game G “Sentences” written. Direction of text output is controlled by a file RtoL.txt in the disk root, which contains a comma-delimited list of right-to-left language numbers.
Game H “Directions” written. Directory shared/gameh contains sub-directories h1 to h10 containing files as follows:

H1\hdata1.txt - Data for game 1

H1\hmap1.pct - Map for game 1

H1\hpath1.pct - Path for game 1. Only the path area is

significant – the rest can be white

background.

H1\hphot1.pct - Photo for game 1
The data files contain two lines of comma-delimited text. The first line is a list of square numbers for map hot-spots, with the first position the correct square. The second line is a list of square numbers passed through in the car journey. Square numbers are as follows:

Dictation section written
Award section written (click on Ozzy, bulbs and bell to test various possibilities).
Record brought up-to-date with new tabs/ticks and no page-turn sound, but still Shock-Headed-Sasha.

Record stores in Windows temp directory between sessions. Recordings dumped when different user enters record section.

Record text changes colour.

Record recording-length scales to original + 25%.

Record Ozzy ‘speaks’ for the user.
Problem on quiz with ‘apron’ sorted out.
‘Menu-strip’ implemented (hold down mouse on ‘exit’ icon).
Volume control drag implemented (not before time!)
Ozzy/Sasha pop-up and score update are both faster.
Narrators buffered between games (makes average game entry faster).
640 x 480 operation sorted out (system clips borders symmetrically).
Install and auto-run sorted out on Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and NT 4. (Note the 32-bit version will run on 95 or NT 4, but not on Win32s or on NT 3. Attempts to do the latter will give an error message.)
Windows 3.1 install checks for Video for Windows, and does an installation if wanted.
Cinepak quiz.avi and PC-data in ‘shared’ directory incorporated as per test version 0.4.1.
Changes to the data storage are as follows:
Target/Dict/Dictitl.pct moved from D to DictMisc. (Makes bringing up the dictation select screen much quicker!)
Game G photos Gphoto.pct moved to a sub-directory GameG\Gpics. (Can we keep the shared Game<> roots free for PC stuff please?)
Game H reorganised as above.
Version 0.4.1, 12-Dec-97
This is a test version with no new features. Changes for testing are as follows:

  1. The 24-bit version of quiz.avi has been recreated using Cinepak codec rather than Microsoft, and the palette kludging taken out of the code. I need to know

  1. Does this solve the problem of background colour not matching?

  2. Is the loss of quality over the old version acceptable?

  1. In an attempt to reduce seeking, the PC directory has been exterminated, and the PC-specific data has been moved into ‘Shared’; new sub-directories Apics, Bpics, Cpics and Dpics have been created off the game directories for game-specific shared data. I need to know if this achieves a significant performance gain on older slower systems (such as Andrew’s Gateway!)

Version 0.4, 8-Dec-97
Changes made as follows:
Quiz now believed fully working (but note ‘known problems’ below). There are two versions of the movie for 256-colour and for real/true-colour displays - the latter looks much better! Background colour has been matched on my video card and drivers - it needs to be tested if this is ok on other systems.
Games A to D updated to ‘final’ versions with Sasha etc.

Score and counters now working

Record storage now working, including “question pool”

New clues system fully implemented.

Menu wheel updated to ‘final’ version with flash on selection, rim lights etc.

Cursor transparency problem fixed
Still not done are the following:
Record section needs updating

‘Hammer’ section needs writing

Menu strip needs writing

640 x 480 operation needs fixing

Windows 3.1 installer needs writing
Known problems are as follows:
The Quiz goes wrong if running with an ‘apron’ on a screen bigger than 800 x 600

There is an error in the quiz text data for the “Sea and sky” question
Changes to the data storage are as follows:
GameB has sub-directories B1 to B4

GameD has sub-directory Prize
Version 0.3, 5-Sep-97
Changes made as follows:
Now working with shared data (only data for gamec changed)

Now working with new graphics

Palette now standardised, AVIs replaced by FLCs - no more palette lurch

Screen fade/up down implemented (with considerable difficulty!)

New clues system partially implemented.

Volume control implemented (but still no drag)

Multiple cursors implemented (but transparency wrong on game screens)
Still not done are the following:
Score and counters not yet working

Wheel needs flash on menu selection and rim lights

Ozzy needs to ‘speak’ the users input in the record section

Text needs to change colour in the record section

Record length needs to scale to original

Multi-select clues not yet working.
I suggest that a multi-select clue should be described by a file such as \shared\gamef\q3\f3clue.txt (for game f question 3). This should contain a series of lines as follows
x1 y1 x2 y2 x3 y3… <- Polygon coordinates for clue1

x1 y1 x2 y2 x3 y3… <- Polygon coordinates for clue2

etc.
Version 0.2, 24-July-97
Record nearly all working. Known problems with this version are as follows:
Volume control not yet working

Score not yet working

Wheel needs to flash on menu selection

Cursor needs to change at various points

Ozzy needs to ‘speak’ the users input in the record section

Text needs to change colour in the record section
Version 0.1, 22-July-97
This is the first test version. Volume control, scoring, and record aren’t yet working - sorry.
